Cutting edge, VR-empowered recovery

Persistent pain can create significant barriers to recovery and work participation, especially when traditional treatments have not been effective. APM WorkCare’s VR pain recovery program combines immersive technology innovation with clinical expertise to help participants build confidence, improve function and progress their return to work journey.

About the program

VR pain recovery is a technology-enabled rehabilitation program that uses virtual reality to support recovery from persistent pain. Developed in collaboration with Australia’s top pain science researchers and clinicians, this program is designed for employees experiencing prolonged recovery or complex return to work challenges and is often used in long-tail claims where traditional approaches have reached a plateau.

Our VR pain recovery program combines advanced neuroscience with the biology of recovery to create an immersive education program for people experiencing chronic pain.

Program components

The program content is made up of three key components, and are part of a clinically proven management approach that can significantly improve pain and disability outcomes, increasing the likelihood of full recovery for participants with chronic pain.

Education modules

Equip participants with a deep understanding of their pain and the principles of neuroplasticity. This is combined with psychosocial risk management and education.

Movement modules

Participants utilise neuroscience techniques to enhance graded movement and loading.

Neurological modules

Retrain participants’ perceptions of pain by altering sensory inputs during movement, helping to create and consolidate pain-reducing neural pathways.

How it works

Designed to support confidence and independence, this safe, non-invasive 10-week program empowers participants to actively engage in their recovery journey. Please note that the 10-week duration may vary depending on the worker’s availability.

Personalised consultations

An APM WorkCare consultant visits the participant’s home weekly for six weeks.

Engaging VR sessions

Each session includes up to two VR modules, each lasting up to eight minutes, which can be completed sitting or standing.

Progress reviews

During each visit, the consultant and participant review the program and how the intervention suits their specific health and recovery goals.

Comprehensive assessments

Pre and post-assessments are conducted by a consultant to review outcomes, progress towards goals and provide planning for the future.
