Understanding autism and employment
Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that affects people in different ways. Many Autistic people bring valuable skills and strengths to the workplace, including attention to detail, reliability, creativity, specialist knowledge and problem-solving skills.
In Australia:
- Around 1 in 40 Australians are estimated to be Autistic, or approximately 675,000 people.
- The workforce participation rate for Autistic people is significantly lower than for the broader population.
- Many Autistic people want to work but may benefit from personalised employment support and inclusive workplaces.
